Cubing Crazy: An Explanation

A short while ago in math class, we received a challenge packet where we had to work through some questions as best as we could. After solving the problems individually and then discussing as a class, we got the task to choose one question and explain it in a video. Here is the question I chose:

Question: Jody noticed, that when you take three consecutive whole numbers, multiply them all together, and then add the middle number of the three, you get the middle number cubed. 

Can we prove or disprove this theory?

First Speech, First Speaker.

       Not too long ago in my Humanities class, all of the students had to present a speech about a decision they've made. My speech was about how I didn't like to break a commitment. The presentation starts with me telling a story about my devotion to choir, and with much difficulty, how I decide to not continue participating in it -- therefore breaking a commitment.
After completing the writing and presenting processes, I've reflected on some aspects. One being how I've realized the importance of this speech to me. At the start of writing this, I just thought this was a Humanities speech and we had to present it, but after finalising and really adding 'myself' into it, I discovered that this meant more to me than I thought. I never really got a chance to think about that choice and it's significance to me. However, through writing about it I could understand what I did, and I could clearly see the strength I had to be able to make that decision to stop. I'm glad I choose this story to tell, because otherwise I would never had been able to learn about this experience.
       Furthermore, a skill we were taught to use during our speeches, was that you had to give your speech like you were telling a story, because essentially we were. We were telling our classmates and our teachers a story about a decision we'd made. Just like when you are giving an oral book report, your telling your class about your experience when reading the book and any questions related to it. This skill of storytelling that I'd learned through Matthew Dicks and my Humanities teacher, is very useful in two ways. Firstly, it releases pressure from public speaking. Even though I do like speaking in front of an audience, it is still and challenging and a nerve-wracking thing to do. Thinking of the presentation like you were telling a story to your friends and teacher, decreases the amount of nervousness and stress when presenting. Secondly, the writing process becomes easier. Thinking of which special and intelligent-sounding words to include when speaking takes a lot more time than when you're simply writing about something that you thought about or that you experienced. As a result of this speech and the process that went with it, I will be using the story-telling speech skill for any future public speaking project.
       To finalise my reflection, I'm going to explain my next steps. They're simply to continue life as if it was my personal novel to write. I'm going to aim to look at life like each detail and each event has a story attached to it that could be interesting to listen to and to read. Recently, a famous story teller and author told me personally that life is more fun when you are able to pick out the little things that make up the day. Instead of thinking: "I had four classes today, then I went home and did my homework. My day was just same-old, same-old," you could be thinking "I had four classes today and my friend made this funny joke that made me giggle and I think that that was a bright moment in my day." This way, your days will never be dull they'll never pass by unnoticed.
       I'm glad that I did everything the way I did them. I've learned a lot not only from myself, but also  from my classmates' stories. Each was different in their own interesting way. This project was also fun to do, and I wouldn't mind doing it again.

Super Size Me Movie Questions

Recently in our health class we watched the documentary called Super Size Me, which is about a man called Morgan Spurlock who decides to eat a McDonalds McDiet for one month. Throughout the film, we can see the extreme changes in his health.

Here are some questions and answers about the movie:

1. Identify two PHYSICAL changes that happened to Morgan because of his McDonalds diet.
     Morgan went through some physical changes, and one of them was that he definitely showed that he had gained more weight. Another change is that he had become much less fit, since he hadn't exercised through the entire month. 
2. Identify two EMOTIONAL / MENTAL changes that happened to Morgan because of his McDonalds diet.
     One of the emotional / mental changes he went through is that he had gotten more mood swings and a second one was that he had gotten a depressed feeling more often even if he had had a good day. This is because the body was producing much less endorphins. 
3. If Morgan had been doing more exercise each day of his McDonalds diet, do you think he would have experienced the same physical changes? Why or why not?
     Morgan would have experienced those changes, but definitely not as bad as how he experienced them without exercise. Also, it depends on how much he exercised. He would have had to exercise A LOT to be able to burn off all the extra calories that he had eaten. With exercise though, his fitness level would have probably stayed the same. 
4. When people watch this film, do you think they want to eat more, or less fast foods? Explain why.
     I think it depends on the person. People who want to actually make a difference in their lifestyle, would definitely change, however, some people that we saw from the video still wouldn't change. They explained that they didn't have time since their days are spent looking after their children and going to work.  
5. Many people eat fast food because it is cheap. Is eating healthy food expensive? Is having a healthy eating habit only possible for those who can afford it? Explain why or why not.
     This statement is false. Foods such as fruits and vegetables are super cheap and are great for your body. However, there are other factors that contribute to people buying fast food rather than healthier foods. Things such as vegetables don't come ready made like a portion of McFries; you need to prepare the vegetables which takes time, which many people don't usually have. 
6. Mr. Gorske eats Big Macs everyday of his life. Do you think that McDonald's food is affecting Mr. Gorse health? Although Mr. Gorse does not look overweight from the outside, what health problems could he be developing inside the body?
     Mr. Gorske may not know it, but definitely inside of him, he could developing a plaque. He is eating so many fats, which includes cholesterol, and those stick together inside his blood vessels. Most likely, he'll have multiple building up at a time since he has eaten OVER 25,000 Bib Macs! Another thing is that his heart could be developing heart problems and diseases and he most likely has high-blood pressure as well.

My SMART goal is to be able to be able to improve my general tennis playing skills.


S: I want to become better in serving, forehand, backhand, blocking and volleying.
M: I will see a difference when I can play a good game without that many mistakes.
A: I will practice my skills during my tennis lessons.
R: This goal will also help my fitness and such.
T: I want to have achieved my goal at the end of the semester.
