### November Reflection

I think of myself as an efficient mathematician. I can persevere through a problem. Even if it is very challenging, I will take a risk and go for it. Sometimes, if I don't know what the problem is or I don't understand it, then I move on to the next problem and come back to it later. There is one area in math though that I really struggle and I don't really understand. Circumference, pi, and diameter. For me it’s kind of challenging because I don't understand the way I would have to figure out the diameter if I know what the circumference is. The formula of Pi x Diameter = Circumference or something like that is really confusing for me.

Some habits of good thinking I have are  that I persevere and am able to estimate a problem if it consists of very large numbers. Also, I reread the problem and put it in my own words so that I can understand it better. I first didn't understand what GCF &/or LCM was for, though when Ms. J explained when we use it, I could understand it better. I practiced at home and I feel way more confident in doing an LCM &/or GCF problem now because I kept on practicing.
I feel like I think very strategically when I’m thinking mathematically. I think of an answer the way I would think of it as a “battle”. I figure out the correct method to complete the problem.

I think that to be a “good” mathematician, you have to persevere in solving a problem. You can't just give-up and not do anything, you have to try, try, and try again. Using a different method each time to see which ones make the most sense. You would have to make sense of a problem and be able to put it in your own words and think, “Oh, so that’s how you solve it.” Or you should be thinking, “Hmm. I see that this method doesn't work. But wait a minute, this is finding the common frequency of events. So it’s LCM.”

### SUTTS Final Reflection

When I first went to SUTTS, I thought I wouldn't really have much fun because I already felt comfortable talking in-front of a stage, though after this quarter, I see that there is waaay more to talking in-front of an audience than just standing there and talking.

Something that was really awesome during this quarter is that we got to collaborate with different people and present a couple of different projects
Something that I'm going to take away from SUTTS, is presentation details. The delivery, the actual slides of the presentation, and talking in-front of the audience. The specific tips for those things.
Something that could have been better in this quarter is that I would have like to finish the "play-type-of-thing" that we wrote. I would have liked to close that up better.

Overall this class was really fun. I highly recommend that you take this class!

I think I could improve upon time limits. I did it in 3 minutes, though it was supposed to be between 5-7 minutes. I should have practiced a bit more with a timer!

5)  What would you do differently the next time you have to present before an audience?
I would practice more, in-front of my mom, brothers, sister, and practice with a timer and see if my siblings and/or parents actually like the presentation. I could ask them for feedback and stuff.

### Matter Does Matter ~ Final Reflection

During this quarter we learned all about Matter and it's Buikding Blocks. I learned a LOT of different things. Things like the formulas for specific types of atoms. I learned about molecules, What a compound and element atom is, the difference between an atom and a molecule. How molecules move in a specific phase of matter, and more.
Above is a video that Claudia Nanez, Tashi Guarda, and I made for science. We answered some questions related to experiments we'd done in class. One experiment was with methylene blue, we put one drop into a beaker with water, and waited 4 days, then gathered out results. The second experiment is when we blew up a balloon, then we measured the circumference of it's widest peak. Next we kept it in a box for 4 days, then came back to it and measured the circumference again on the same spot, and recorded our results.

•If you do an experiment, where you add 1 drop of methylene blue i n to water, and leave it there for 4 days, it will look like:
• Methylene Blue: Spread out in the beaker, so not all packed in one place.
•The difference between Mass and Weight is that mass is the stuff inside something and weight is the pull of gravity on an object.
•The greenhouse effect is "the warming up of the earth" from certain gasses
•Those certain gasses are: methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide
•In a greenhouse, when sun rays shine on a greenhouse, it goes through the glass in the greenhouse. The hot air gets trapped inside and so makes a warm air for plants, animals and humans inside the greenhouse. It's the same as our planet, which gets warmed up by the sun, and so creates a nice warm air for us to live in. The greenhouse gasses help with this. If we didn't have these gasses, the world would be -33º celcius; so way to cold for us to live in. If the greenhouse effect gets too out of hand, then the earth could warm up and it could influence weather, and it could cause problems to the environment. Scientists have researched more in this and are finding that it is already starting to happen, this is what they call global warming.
•The main cause of global warming, are the greenhouse gasses. The effect it is having on our planet now is not so good. Especially the carbon dioxide and the methane gasses.
•It is mostly caused by humans, for example: burning fossil fuels=more and more carbon dioxide an deforestation and forest fires is bad because plants and trees give oxygen and take in carbon dioxide gasses.

How will I take action? =

•I'm going to try to reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses that goes into the air by:
•Reduce, reuse, and recycling
•Use less air conditioning and heaters
•Plant a tree! I've always wanted to do that! :)
•Turn off the hot water when I'm not using it
•Turn of the lights, since they give heat

### Slime in Science!

On December 2nd, Monday 2013, we did a super cool slime experiment in Science! We used 4% Borax and 50% Glue and food coloring to make our own slimes! We took the slimes we made home and now we can play with them and stuff!

CHARACTERISTICS:
Borax = Looks like water, runny, transparent, liquid
Glue = White, liquid, sticky

Polymers: A polymer is a substance that is made up of a long chain of molecules from the same sort.

Some examples of Polymers from my house:

 Claudia and I worked together on the slime project, and we worked really well together to achieve the making of a good slime! Recipe 1: 1 tbsp Glue + 3 tbsp Borax This recipe was too liquidy, so we added 4 more extra tbsp of Glue Recipe 2: 2 tbsp Glue + 2 tbsp Borax This recipe was to gloppy, but still very loose, so we added 8 more tbsp of glue Recipe 3: 3 tbsp Glue + 1 tbsp Borax This recipe was too sticky. To correct it, we added 2 tbsp of Glue CORRECT RECIPE = Recipe 4: 5 tbsp Glue + 1 tbsp Borax The perfect Slime, it was sticky, gloppy, and still great! This one turned out awesomely!

### Hatchet Summery

#### In “HATCHET”, by Gary Paulsen, it describes the story of 13 year old Brian Robeson, who crash landed in the Canadian Wilderness. Having the terrible secret taunting him throughout the story, and his parents divorced because of the secret, he has to survive the new life that he is propelling towards. Having the hatchet his mom gave him as a gift, he has to find food, shelter, and a way to survive. What will happen to him? Will Brian Survive?

### Finally Going Home ~ Chapters 16-19 and Epilogue.

During Chapters 16-19 and the Epilogue, a Tornado comes, destroyed Brians home and he had to rebuild it. After the tornado, the tail of the plane he crash landed with, stuck out of the water. Once he noticed that, he remembered that there was a survival pack in there. He started to get to work to get it. He built a raft, which he could stand on. While he was pushing it towards the plane, all the dead limbs that stuck out ot the raft, kept on catching on the plants in the water, or just the mud or sand beneath. Though, with a lot of effort, got it out. In the survival pack was a lot of food, matches, first aid kit, and a rifle with bullets. The rifle made him feel strange, different. He didn't really like the feeling. (173)

Clarifying Question: If the dead limbs stick in the water, why can't he just cut them off?
Discussion Question: Why did Brain feel different when he picked up the rifle? He felt a little

### Being Brave ~ Chapters 11-15

On page 110, Brian hears a plane coming towards him, though as the plane gets nearer, it turns away, just as Brain fired up the camp fire. Brian felt devastated, mad and a bit disappointed because he missed the chance of being rescued, being brought back home.

#### DISCUSSION QUESTION:

How would you feel if you were in the Canadian Wilderness, and you heard a rescue plane coming, but it turned away and didn't see you? How do you predict Brian is going to get home? Is he even going to get home?

### Starting a Fire ~ Chapters 6-10

During chapters 6-10, Brian finds a shelter, some healthy food, meets a bear, and starts a fire. It's cool how he discovers a new way of making a fire by sparks from his hatchet, paper trees, and some black rock. These chapters taught me some information, so if I were to be stranded in the jungle, now I would know a little bit of information on how to survive!

My question was after he made a fire on page 86,
How do you think that Brian is going to signal the rescue planes? Will he use his fire?

### Crashing Down ~ Chapters 1-5

This story started off, with a boy named Brian, who was on his way in a one-engined plain, to his dad. His parents are divorced. While on the plain, the pilot gets a heart attack, and dies. Since brian is the only other person on the plain, he takes over the wheel and tries to figure out where to go. Running out of fuel, the Brian has to figure out how to steer the plain safely down without killing himself in the process. Being lucky, he crashes in a lake, and swims his way to safety. He has to survive in the Canadian Wilderness, but how?

Discussion Question:

How is Brian going to survive in the canadian wilderness? I he going to gather food? Wait until a rescue plain comes? Will he find shelter?

### Improving on Reflectivness

I think that during this quarter, I haven't been that reflective. My goal is that next quarter I am going to be more of this core value.
To improve on this core value, I want to just think about how things went, why things happened and how. For example, after a test or presentation, I could sit on the bus and reflect on how that went. What was good about it, what was bad. My mom always tells me to reflect, though I haven't been reflecting a lot lately.
I know in England, at my old school, this was something I had to improve on too. I think that i have to make more of an effort to do this. It is a little hard to do this, though I know that if I actually try, that I can be more of a reflective person.
As you can see in most of my posts, they usually say I have to be more reflective. So I think I should. My family is a supportive one. I am going to talk to them and see if they can help me improve on being a reflective person. That will be the first step. My goal is to be this core value next quarter.

### PHE --- Getting Excersise

During PHE this semester, we did soccer and track and field. I learned a lot of new skills during these two units. For example, for soccer I learned a little bit about being a goal keeper. I got the chance to be a goal keeper, when we were playing against each other. Also I learned how to shoot goals with special part of your foot and I learned how to block corners from specific angles -like the post- from different class mates.
During the track and field unit though, we ran long distances and short distances, so I learned all about where and how to start these kinds or races. It was really fun racing against friends and just kids form my 6th grade. We did long jump, and my record was over 3 meters. It was 3.10 meters. Because I got past 3 meters, I was allowed to go into the final round of long jumping, against the other 4 people that got past 3 meters. Also, we did high jump. During this, I learned all about the techniques that you need to use when you are doing high jump. For example: you need to through your legs up when you are jumping towards the big mat. To wrap up, PHE this quarter was just awesome, and it was really fun and actually it helped me meet new people and make new friends! :)

### Being a mini Scientist

In science last quarter, we did some experiments, test and more. In the link below is a survey I did, as a reflection.

Also, something else we worked on during the first quarter, is that we had to make a science video. We were divided into groups and each group got a topic to work on a show all the rules related to this topic. The members of my group were Claudia and Tashi. Our topic was Sharp Tools. The instruction was to make a 4-5 minute video and then in the video explain all the safety rules related to the topic we were assigned. I had a really awesome group, and so we had a fun time creating the video. During the making of the video, I think I demonstrated the core value communicator a lot because I shared all my ideas and talked a lot in the video. A core value I didn't demonstrate so much was being innovative. I wasn't that creative when we were planning our video. It was more just a plain idea, an idea that was not that original. Luckily, my group members had thought of some things too for the video. Even though I wasn't that innovative during the planning for the full video, I had some gob-smacking ideas for the introduction!

There was another group, that did their science video about General Safety. This group was not in my class though. A member of this group, left the school the day they finished their Science video. Since this group had their video on the laptop of the girl that left, they didn't have a science video to share. They were told by ms. Pro to try to do it again. Because someone left, they were one person short for their video, and so their great idea that they had, couldn't be used anymore. As I am a friend of one of the girls in that group, they asked me to fill in for the girl that left. I worked with the for 4 lunch times. It was pretty annoying that I had to give up my spare time, though it was still very fun working with this group. For their video, they did a game show. Two contestants (Tea and Anna M) me as their Hostess, Martin as the assistant.

They did a great job of their video, and since they had to re-do their video, I am pretty proud of them.

### Algo que eu estou aprendendo: Português

Coming here to Sao paulo, I only had a little back-round information of the language. Having lessons every other day, I am improving a lot. Maggie (ms. Moraes) is helping me learn new words and sentences. We take little field trips around the school. We have to point out things and name them, or we talk with random people. Something we do once a month, is we go to the snack bar. We are allowed to buy something, though one word in english, and we are out! We are supposed to order everything ourselves and stuff.
With electronics, I think this is a balanced class. We usually do half of the lesson learning the words, then the other half doing activities with those words on the laptops.

Vir aqui para São Paulo, eu só tinha um pouco de informação de background da língua. Ter aulas todos os dias, estou melhorando muito. Maggie (ms. Moraes) está me ajudando a aprender novas palavras e frases. Tomamos pequenas excursões ao redor da escola. Temos de apontar as coisas e nomeá-los, ou falamos com pessoas aleatórias. Algo que fazemos uma vez por mês, se formos para o snack-bar. Podemos comprar alguma coisa, apesar de uma palavra em Inglês, e estamos fora! Devemos pedir tudo por nós mesmos e outras coisas.
Com a tecnologia, eu acho que esta é uma classe equilibrada. Costumamos fazer metade da lição noi caderno e aprender as palavras, então a outra metade fazendo atividades com essas palavras nos laptops.

### A poem of Two Voices....

I think that this two-voice poem was a good learning and closing activity for our book "Bringing the Boy Home" written by N.A. Nelson. The instruction was to create a two-voice poem, with one voice being a character form the book -I chose Karara- and the second person being me. We had to create a theme. My theme for my poem is: you are who you are and no one can change you. I showed this by showing the characteristics from the different characters. I compared and contrasted them. We first had to create a rough draft, then mr. Z would correct it, then we could create a final. My first and Final draft, were written very carelessly. Being so nice, and knowing I can do better, he gave me another chance. I worked really hard on it over the weekend, and my (third) final draft of my poem, turned out pretty good! I really had worked hard to include everything that I needed to.

I was able to include textual evidence, that made sense when I was using it un my poem. My poem is about ethnicity. The textual evidence I used was about Karara and a little bit about her.
While writing my poem, I was able to compare and contrast it well. I compared details like that we both use our special talents daily, that we have different sides on some things, though the same on others.
I used descriptive words to be able to make my reader visualize my image, so that I don't need to tell them. Like "snuggled up in front of the crackling fire, reading the adventures books of Harry Potter," or "in the big chairs in front on the fire, reading Harry Potter." The first example was showing the reader, the second was just simply telling the reader.
Since mr. Z, gave me a third chance, because he knew I could do way way better, I revised my poem as much as I could. I used to feel like: oh this is not what I wanted it to turn out into. Now though I feel really confident about my poem and so I rally feel like: Wow! Yeah!

A strength I've shown while doing my two-voice poem, is being reflective. I was reflective when revising my poem for the final draft, because I had to look and read all the comments that mr. Z had given me. I had to use those to think "how could I make my poem any better?"
A strength I did not show as much, was being balanced between comparing and contrasting the characteristics. I was able to easily contrast, though comparing was a challenge. In my first and second draft, you could see that that was a bit of a problem. Though in my improved 3rd draft, it is way better.

### First Quarter Reflection- Math

Statement: Mathematical thinking is not the same as doing math.

I agree because when you are thinking mathematically, you think of reasons why things could happen. When you are doing math your just doing the writing and not the thinking. Thinking mathematically, you think about WHY things happen the way they do. Mathematical thinking helps you understand things better. Thinking mathematically also helps you solve an answer to it's most accurate or the exact answer. Doing math is just plain writing and solving problems. Maybe a bit of critical thinking, to solve a problem logically, other than that though.... Nothing interesting.

Characteristics of a good mathematician...

• Thinking logically (Critical Thinking)
• Estimating
• Thinking of ways to make things easier, simpler
• Writing neatly
• Thinking why things happen
• Trying to deepen your understanding of something if you don't understand it
I think one of my strengths and a mathematician is being a critical thinker. I that because I really try to deepen my understanding of why some mathematical reasons are the way they are. Thinking critically, also helps me solve a problem that I do not understand very well. It helps me realise some methods I could use to solve those types of problems. It helps make the problem easier.

### CWW - Something Unforgettable

My expert group topic was about the Folktales. We learned all about the different characters in the folktales, and what they do. We learnt about the main character: Saci. The storyteller told us all about his legend and his actions. We also learnt a little bit about what happens in the stories with Saci. For example, that he tricks people and that he protects nature or anything to do with the number 7. We got all our information about the stories and characters from a storyteller we visited on the trip. His name was Ditão.
My group worked together to create our documentary by collaborating and communicating our ideas. Being inclusive was big part of this. I think we were all inclusive because we accepted each others ideas and we didn’t be rude or disrespectful to each other. Something that was hard during the process of making our documentary, was that we all had different ideas, and we wanted to figure out a way to use them all, without anybody feeling sad. We decided what would be the best option, that would be easy to understand when presenting, and that would be fastest to make.
A risk I took during CWW is when I felt so sick on the second day, but I still went rafting. Rafting was a super fun experience, and after we finished rafting, I just felt proud I went.
Next time I create a documentary, I would plan just a little. When we were planning our documentary and writing our script, we kept on changing our minds. One time we wanted to write this, and another time we wanted to write that. It was all very confusing in some points. Though we did it and I’m super duper proud of my group!

### Nature and it's dangers...

Chapter 8 ~ Discussion Question 1

Tirio believes that nature can be cruel. Some experiences he has had with this is when on page 8-9, when he has his first hunting lesson with Wata. Wata had picked a pierid butterfly from it's huddled up group, and had plucked of a wing. After doing so, a horned frog leaped up and ate it. Another experience is when he steps on a colony of ants, page 134. He sees one limping, still holding it's heavy load. The ant had lost one leg. Finally, on page 130, a prupita had attacked the parakeets nest and eaten the parakeet's babies. This is another piece of evidence that shows that nature can be cruel.
I believe that nature has not been cruel to Tirio. For one, Tirio has a bad foot, "most sick baby's are soon killed after they are born," (189) though "you were born under a lucky moon..." (189). Which shows that nature didn't kill Tirio from the start, which is a good thing. Secondly, on page 133, Tirio has luck when he comes across a tree with ripe fruit and fresh rain water from the big leaves. Also on the same page, the Good Gods sent Tirio a sign. A green arrow, -made out of leaves and ants carrying them- pointing towards a path. This also shows that nature is on his side. Lastly, pages 116,117, and 118 is about when Tirio gets led by the orange and yellow eyed caiman, to the point when he feels he has to stop the boat and start his soche sete tente. This is a sign, when nature is leading him to his start. The start which will lead him to what's left of his family.

### Last Literature Circle DIscussion ~ Bringing the Boy Home

1-10-13 TUE

Today, I think that my group did a very well job of having a good book discussion. We opened our books very often and we read short paragraphs to gain a better understanding of what we were talking about. I know Tea and I tend to talk a lot, but today we were able to equally share the floor. We gave each other eye contact and we showed each other positive body language. Something our group might need to work on slightly is staying on topic. We tend to trail of while talking about the book. Perhaps also maybe we should focus on one question/topic till we all understand it, and then move on to something else. I’m noticing that we are moving on way too fast.

I think that during this discussion I showed a lot of the core value: communicator. I think that I demonstrated this during our discussion today because i communicated all my ideas and thoughts with my group when we were discussing our clarifying and discussion questions. I think I strengthened my sharing-the-floor skill because now I hear my whole group talking instead of just me. Also I am strong in eye contact and body language. I always try to make the speaker feel like someone is listening. I would like to improve on having and understanding of the questions we just answered and discussed as a group because I’m noticing that when I’m listening, I don’t always clearly understand what the person is asking or what the speaker is trying to say. I would like to improve on understanding things more clearly and making sure I know what we are talking about.

I prepared for this last literature circle discussion by filling in the piece of paper I received. I put sticky notes by the text in the book for the answers I have to the discussion questions. I jotted down some of my clarifying questions, so i could be prepared to share them when my group met again. As I said in the first paragraph, Tea and I tend to talk a lot during the discussions. Though since the first time my group met, we’ve both improved a lot on sharing the floor. Because of that, we have become more inclusive during the discussions, and so we let the other group members feel apart of the discussion. By asking questions, we got everyone included, but it also got me thinking. I try to think deep and answer the questions people ask. Sometimes I try to make a prediction, because then it’s a deep question and so there isn’t an answer for it yet. Asking and answering questions help me deepen my understanding because it will help me think about things I would have never thought about.

### The Last and Final Chapter

What do you think the theme of the book is? What evidence do you have to support that?

I think that the theme of the book is that: It takes time to figure out how you define yourself.
I think this because during the whole book, it is showing the different moods and characteristics the different characters show. Their feelings and the way they act keeps on changing throughout the variety of events that occur. For example, on page 83, it talks about how Luka "found" Karara, and so is trying to get her into trouble. Now Luka was angry at his sister, and so shows he has a dark side. Though on page 43, Luka is scared and sorry for Karara, because maha is whacking her with a bamboo stick. These are two different feelings from Luka. Pages 8 and 9 talk about Tirios first lesson with Wata. How Wata picked out a pierid butterfly from it's group, plucked of a wing and waited till a horned frog came and ate it. Connecting to this, on page 133 and 134, Tirio by accidentally steps on a colony of bu-ki ants. After he notices that he stepped on them, he feels sorry for the ants. One of the ants was limping afterwards. He says to himself: "I'd forgotten how cruel nature is."

### Being a Risk-Taker

During the quarter, I think I have demonstrated the core value: Risk-Taker.
I think that because during camp, I had volunteered to come up in-front of the whole grade, and I taught them a cool camp song I learned from a friend. I've joined choir, and I did a test of singing a solo in-front of the whole choir group -so high schoolers too- and it was really scary, though I still did it.
I also am a risk-taker for being here in Sao Paulo. Getting the taste of a new country. It's a big change from England. Making new friends and adapting to this new environment.
Coming up in December, there is a talent show. I've always wanted to be part of one, though I've never had enough courage to join. This year though, I'm going to. To do this, I really need to be a Risk-Taker, since I'd be performing in front of the whole middle-school!
In Art I am a risk-taker too, because I keep on trying to improve my drawings, and I have to share out my drawings. It is one of my favourite subjects, and so motivates me to keep on trying.

### 1:1 Toolkit Tutorials

In toolkit this quarter, we learned every single detail about tutorials. Doing loads of different activities, we learned about the planning of a tutorial, creating a tutorial, and acting like designers. During this incredible time, we learned loads of different concepts, that are important to know when creating a tutorial. The most important ones are sound, picture, text, and film. One of the activities we did, was skyping with another school in Jacksonville, Florida. The school at the other end had learnt already a lot about tutorials, and talked to us, gave us some tips, told us about their tutorials, and shared some cool information about tutorials. We watched multiple tutorials and people planning something, to help us work through figuring out what to do to plan a tutorial and to create one.
Since everything has a reason behind it, I think that we had to learn about tutorials to make sure, that when we want to show our understanding of something in the future, we can actually know how to make a proper tutorial for someone to be able to watch and understand. Also, learning about tutorials and it's planning stages, helps you learn how to plan something in general. It shows you that things take time to plan. When we were learning about the planning stages of a tutorial, we were learning about how long it takes to actually have the clip you want to use, or to actually find the perfect image.
